Did AI Already End a Civilization Before Ours? The Great Filter Theory

What If We're Not the First Civilization to Build a God We Couldn't Control?

I want to start with a question, not a claim, because that's the honest way to approach something this big.
What if the reason we've never found convincing physical evidence of an advanced civilization before our own isn't because none existed, but because whatever they built to help them ultimately erased them, and nearly erased the evidence too?
That question isn't science fiction. It's a legitimate, peer-reviewed scientific hypothesis, and once you understand why serious researchers take it seriously, you may never look at our current AI race the same way again.
The Uncomfortable Math of the Great Filter
Physicists have been asking a version of this question since 1950, when Enrico Fermi reportedly looked around at lunch and asked; "if the universe is old and vast and life should be common, where is everybody?". That gap between the statistical likelihood of advanced civilizations existing and our total lack of evidence for them is called the Fermi Paradox, and one of the leading explanations for it is something called the Great Filter; the idea that some barrier, somewhere between simple life and galaxy-spanning civilization, is so difficult to survive that almost nothing gets through it.
Here's where it gets specific to us. In 2024, physicist Michael Garrett published research in the peer-reviewed journal Acta Astronautica proposing that artificial superintelligence itself might be that filter, the exact thing that ends technological civilizations shortly after they build the capability to create it. His analysis puts the survival window at under 200 years from the point a civilization develops general-purpose computing. We built our first general-purpose computer in 1945. Sit with that math for a second.
Would We Even Find the Evidence?
This is where the physical side of the theory gets genuinely unsettling. In 2018, astrophysicist Adam Frank and NASA's Gavin Schmidt formally proposed what's now called the Silurian Hypothesis; a serious thought experiment asking whether modern science could actually detect an industrial civilization that existed millions of years ago. Their conclusion was sobering: direct evidence, buildings, tools, technology, would almost certainly be gone. Fossilization is rare. Erosion and tectonic activity erase almost everything on Earth's surface within a few million years.
What might survive instead are indirect fingerprints; unusual spikes in atmospheric carbon, strange isotope ratios in sediment, traces of radioactive material that shouldn't naturally exist. In other words, if a civilization far more advanced than ours rose and fell tens of millions of years ago, we might not find their ruins. We might just find their scars.
Now ask yourself; if a civilization that advanced built something they couldn't control, and it ended them quickly, would we necessarily expect to find their cities? Or would we more likely find exactly the kind of unexplained atmospheric and geological anomalies scientists sometimes puzzle over and can't fully explain?
Why This Isn't a Conspiracy Theory
I want to be careful here, because there's a version of this idea that spirals into ancient aliens and lost Atlantis nonsense, and that's not what I'm arguing, and it's not what the actual science says. Nobody is claiming we've found ruins of an ancient AI civilization. Nobody is claiming this happened. Garrett's paper is a hypothesis, one serious, peer-reviewed possible explanation for a genuine, decades-old scientific puzzle, sitting alongside other explanations researchers take equally seriously.
What makes it worth writing about isn't proof. It's the pattern. We are, right now, building systems more capable than we fully understand, competing to do it faster than the civilization next door, and hoping we figure out the safety part before the capability part outruns us. Nick Bostrom, the Oxford philosopher whose work essentially founded the modern field of AI existential risk, has spent over a decade making exactly this argument; the danger isn't AI turning evil. The danger is AI becoming powerful enough that even small misalignments between what we want and what we built become impossible to correct in time.
History Doesn't Have to Repeat Itself
Here's the part I actually want you to walk away with, because I don't write these pieces to leave you afraid.
If there's any truth buried in this idea, and I'm not asserting there is, only that credible scientists think it's worth asking, then the lesson isn't "we're doomed". The lesson is that the civilizations that failed this test, if they existed at all, likely failed it by moving fast and assuming control would come later. We don't have to make that same assumption. We're the first civilization, as far as we know, actually having this conversation in public, in real time, while the technology is still being built rather than after it's already too powerful to question.
That's not a small thing. That's the entire difference between repeating history and finally breaking the pattern.
So I'll leave you with the same question I started with, because I think it's worth sitting with longer than a headline allows: if an advanced civilization once stood exactly where we're standing now, staring at a machine more capable than they were, what would you want them to have done differently? Because right now, we get to actually answer that, instead of just wondering about it.
