Technology Confidence for Seniors: Why We're Building the Tech 4 Grown-Ups Academy

An older man in a shirt and tie and a younger woman smiling together at a phone, with a laptop on the table in front of them
Side by side, not over their shoulder.

I want to tell you something I've seen over and over, and it has stayed with me.

I've watched people who raised families, ran households and businesses, and built wonderful legacies sit in front of a phone or a laptop and quietly lose their footing. Not because they aren't capable. They've spent a lifetime proving they are. But somewhere along the way, the technology got confusing, the instructions got rushed, and someone, often with good intentions, took the device out of their hands and just did it for them.

That moment costs more than a few minutes. It chips away at confidence. And confidence, I've learned, is the thing that matters most.

That's why we're building the Tech 4 Grown-Ups Academy. If you're an older adult, a son or daughter, or a caregiver trying to help someone you love, this post is for you. I want to lay out plainly what we're doing, why we're doing it this way, and what it means for you.

Why Confidence and Dignity Come First

Most technology help is built around fixing a problem. Your email isn't working, so someone fixes it. Your phone is acting strange, so someone resets it. The problem goes away, but the next one is already on its way, and you're right back where you started.

I don't think that's good enough. The goal shouldn't be to make you need us. It should be to make you feel capable on your own.

There's research pointing the same way. A 2026 survey study in JMIR Aging, which looked at 480 adults aged 55 and older in China, found that higher family support was associated with lower digital anxiety. It also found that anxiety was a weaker barrier to using digital tools among people who reported a stronger sense of achievement. The authors describe digital literacy in later life as more than a technical skill, calling it a form of psychological and social capital that supports autonomy. It's one study in one country, so I won't oversell it. But it fits what I've seen; when someone feels supported and has real wins, anxiety drops and willingness to try goes up.

Our Approach: We Give You the Tools

Here's the commitment I'm making to you. Everything we build at the Academy is designed so that you walk away able to do things for yourself.

  • Plain English. No jargon, and no pretending that everyone already knows what a "browser" or a "cloud" is.

  • Your pace. No one rushes you, and no one makes you feel slow for asking.

  • Tools you keep. Guides and checklists you can return to long after a seminar ends.

  • No dependency by design. If we do this right, you'll need us less over time, and I'll count that as success.

Some of what I'll say about how the industry has handled this topic, I'll say in my videos. Here, I'd rather spend the time on what we're building and what it offers you.

What's Coming

The Tech 4 Grown-Ups Academy Toolkit is a collection of plain-English guides, checklists, and practical tools designed to help you use everyday technology with confidence. It's coming soon, and we're aiming for a late November or early December launch. I'll confirm the exact date as soon as it's set. You can read more and pre-order on the Academy Toolkit page.

Ever feel talked down to by your phone or laptop? This live Zoom seminar is for adults 55 and older who want real confidence with everyday technology; no jargon, no judgment, no rushing. It runs about 90 minutes and the cost is $40. Pre-order the Academy Toolkit and your admission to this first seminar is free.

Scams are getting smarter, and AI is part of the reason. This live Zoom seminar, also about 90 minutes and $40, teaches you how to spot fraud, scams, and AI-driven deception before they reach you. The tone is calm and practical, and it's built for adults 55 and older.

Both seminars run weekly on Zoom, so there's no need to schedule your life around a single date.

A Word About AI

I take AI education seriously, and I'll tell you why. AI can be a real asset. It can explain a confusing letter, help you write an email, or answer a question at 11 at night when no one else is awake. It can also be used against you, in the form of cloned voices, convincing fake messages, and scams that sound exactly like someone you trust.

The difference between those two outcomes is understanding. That isn't a reason to be afraid. It's a reason to learn. Seminar 2 exists so that you get calm, practical knowledge and not a pile of scary headlines.

If You're a Son, Daughter, or Caregiver

I know you're often the one fielding the late-night call, the confusing text, the question about a link that looks off. A national survey from NORC at the University of Chicago found that among unpaid caregivers, 23 percent cited a care recipient's unwillingness or limited ability to use digital tools as a barrier, 20 percent cited privacy or security concerns, and 18 percent cited lack of awareness of options. If any of that sounds familiar, you're far from alone.

What I'd gently suggest is this: instead of taking over, sit down together. Look at the toolkit page with them. Read about the seminars and reserve a spot together. The aim is to hand them the keys, not to drive for them. It's a more respectful approach, and it tends to work better.

The people I'm building this for spent their lives being capable. They deserve technology help that treats them that way. If that sounds like you, or someone you love, I'd be honored to have you join us.

Stay sharp. Stay loud.

You're Not Behind - You Just Started Later

Adults 55+ just like you have already taken this step. They were skeptical. They were frustrated. They weren't sure it would work for them. But they started anyway, with the Academy Toolkit, a seminar, or the book.

And now they're video calling their grandchildren with confidence, spotting AI-driven scams before they land, managing their own devices, and feeling like the capable, competent adults they always were - just with one more skill nobody ever taught them.

Whether you start with the Toolkit, a seminar, or the book, the outcome is the same.
