UK Users Are Ditching Google, and They're Turning to a Browser Called Tor

Something quietly massive happened across the UK last year, and I don't think enough people connected the dots on what it actually means. When the UK's Online Safety Act triggered mandatory age verification, requiring ID uploads, face scans, and credit card checks just to access ordinary websites, VPN downloads exploded by over 1,800 percent in a single weekend. Proton VPN alone saw signups soar by 1,400 percent within minutes of the law taking effect. That wasn't a fluke. That was millions of people realizing, all at once, that they'd rather protect their privacy than hand over a selfie to prove their age to a website.
Now that same instinct is pushing a growing number of UK users one step further, past VPNs entirely, and into Tor. If you've never heard of it, or you've only heard it whispered about in the context of the "dark web", I want to walk you through what it actually is, why it exists, and why leaving Google's ecosystem behind might be one of the smartest digital decisions you make this year.
Why People Are Leaving Google in the First Place
Here's the uncomfortable truth about Google that most people never stop to think about. Every search you run, every site you visit while logged in, every ad you click, gets logged, profiled, and used to build an advertising picture of you that gets sold to the highest bidder. Google isn't a search engine that happens to sell ads. It's an advertising company that happens to offer a search engine, and your data is the product.
Layer that on top of what's happening legislatively right now. The UK's Online Safety Act now requires age verification not just for pornography sites, but for a sweeping range of categories including social media, gaming platforms, and even search itself, using methods like facial recognition selfies, credit card checks, and digital ID matching. Ofcom has real enforcement teeth here too, with the power to fine companies up to 10 percent of their global revenue for non-compliance. People aren't just uncomfortable with Google's data harvesting anymore. They're watching their everyday browsing get tied to their actual legal identity, and that combination is exactly what's driving this exodus.
What Tor Actually Is, and Why It's Different From a VPN
Tor, short for The Onion Router, and is a free, open-source browser that routes your traffic through at least three separate volunteer-run relays around the world, encrypting it in layers, like an onion, at every single hop. No single relay ever knows both who you are and what you're looking at. Your internet provider sees that you're connected to Tor, but not what you're doing inside it. The website you visit sees that a Tor user arrived, but not your real location or identity.
That's a meaningfully different level of protection than a standard VPN, which just reroutes your traffic through one company's servers, a company that could theoretically still be compelled to hand over logs. Tor's own security guidance is explicit that this layered, decentralized design is what makes it fundamentally harder to trace than a single-provider tool.
Here's What You Actually Gain by Switching
Your searches, browsing history, and location stop being logged and monetized by a single advertising company
No single relay, website, or government agency can see both your identity and your activity at the same time
You can access websites and content your government or ISP has restricted, without submitting ID, a selfie, or a credit card
You stop training Google's ad-targeting algorithm with every click, meaning less profiling, fewer eerily specific ads, and a genuine reduction in your personal data footprint
It's completely free, funded by nonprofits and privacy advocates rather than advertisers
If You're in the EU, This Matters to You Too
I don't want my EU readers thinking this is a UK-only story. The EU has GDPR, which gives you stronger baseline data rights than the US, but proposals around "Chat Control" and mandatory message scanning have kept EU privacy advocates on edge, and Tor gives you a way to opt out of that surveillance conversation entirely, on your own terms, rather than waiting on Brussels to sort it out. If you're in Ireland, Germany, France, or anywhere else in the bloc, the exact same download process and benefits apply to you as they do to UK users.
And for my North American readers; don't assume this is someone else's problem. The US doesn't have a federal privacy law anywhere close to GDPR, and Canada's own regulators have been actively investigating AI companies for privacy violations this year. Google's data practices don't change depending on which side of the Atlantic you're on. Tor works exactly the same way, and offers you the exact same protection, whether you're in London, Toronto, or Los Angeles.
How to Actually Get Tor
Go directly to torproject.org, the only official source, and avoid downloading Tor from any third-party site or app store listing you're not certain about
Choose your operating system, Windows, macOS, Linux, or Android, and download the Tor Browser bundle directly
Install it like any normal browser, no technical skill required
Open it and click "Connect"; it will automatically route you through the Tor network
If Tor is blocked in your specific network or country, use the built-in "bridge" option during setup to connect anyway
Your Checklist to Make Tor Actually Work for You
Getting Tor is the easy part. Using it correctly is what actually protects you, so run through this list every time:
Never log into your personal Google, Facebook, or Amazon account while using Tor, doing so instantly re-links your anonymous session to your real identity
Set your security level to "Safest" in settings if you're doing anything sensitive, this disables JavaScript, which is one of the most common ways sites try to unmask Tor users
Always check for HTTPS in the address bar before entering any personal information, Tor protects your path to a site, not what that site does once you arrive
Don't torrent over Tor, it slows the entire network for everyone and can expose your real IP address
Don't install extra browser add-ons or plugins, they can bypass Tor's protections entirely without you realizing it
Avoid opening downloaded documents, especially PDFs or DOC files, while still connected, they can quietly phone home and reveal your real IP
Keep the browser updated, security patches roll out regularly and matter more here than on almost any other browser you use
One Honest Caveat
I want to be straight with you before you dive in. Tor is slower than Google Chrome or Safari, because your traffic is bouncing through multiple relays across the globe instead of taking a direct path. That's the tradeoff for the anonymity you're gaining, and it's a tradeoff I think is absolutely worth it for anyone serious about reclaiming their privacy; but it's fair to know going in that streaming and heavy browsing will feel noticeably different than what you're used to.
