Have you ever picked up your phone to check one thing, and looked up 45 minutes later not entirely sure where the time went? You are not alone, and it is not a personal failing. Your phone is designed by experts to keep you on it as long as possible. But there is a built-in tool on both iPhones and Android phones that puts you back in control, and it takes less than five minutes to set up.

Why Screen Time Limits Matter

The average adult spends over 4 hours per day on their smartphone, much of it without any conscious intention. For adults 55 and over, unintentional phone use is often tied to social media scrolling, which research links to increased anxiety, poor sleep, and lower feelings of wellbeing.

Setting a simple daily time limit on the apps that tend to pull you in; Facebook, YouTube, news apps, is one of the most effective things you can do to protect your mental health and reclaim your time. And your phone already has the tool built in. You just need to know where to find it.

How to Set Screen Time Limits on an iPhone

Apple calls this feature Screen Time. Here is exactly how to set it up:

Step 1: Open Screen Time

  1. Tap Settings (the grey gear icon on your home screen)

  2. Scroll down and tap Screen Time

  3. If it is your first time, tap Turn On Screen Time → tap This is My iPhone

Step 2: Set App Limits

  1. Tap App Limits

  2. Tap Add Limit

  3. You will see a list of app categories — tap Social Networking to limit Facebook, Instagram, and similar apps

  4. Or tap Add Apps to find a specific app like YouTube

  5. Tap Next in the top right corner

  6. Set your daily limit — for example, 30 minutes

  7. Tap Add in the top right corner

Step 3: Turn on Downtime (optional but recommended)

  1. Go back to the main Screen Time page

  2. Tap Downtime

  3. Toggle it On

  4. Set a start and end time — for example, 10:00 PM to 7:00 AM

  5. During Downtime, only apps you specifically allow will be accessible

When you reach your limit, your phone will show a gentle notification. You can choose to ignore it, but the reminder alone is often enough to make you pause and make a conscious choice.

How to Set Screen Time Limits on an Android Phone

Android calls this feature Digital Wellbeing. The steps are slightly different depending on your phone brand (Samsung, Google Pixel, etc.) but the process is very similar across all Android devices.

Step 1: Open Digital Wellbeing

  1. Tap Settings (the gear icon)

  2. Scroll down and tap Digital Wellbeing and Parental Controls

  3. You will see a dashboard showing your daily usage — how long you've spent on each app today

Step 2: Set a Timer for a Specific App

  1. On the Digital Wellbeing dashboard, tap the chart or graph showing your usage

  2. Find the app you want to limit — for example, Facebook

  3. Tap the hourglass icon next to it

  4. Set your daily time limit — for example, 30 minutes

  5. Tap OK

When you reach your limit, the app icon will grey out for the rest of the day. You can still unlock it if you choose, but the visual reminder is a powerful nudge.

Step 3: Set Bedtime Mode (optional)

  1. Go back to Digital Wellbeing

  2. Tap Bedtime Mode

  3. Set your bedtime hours — your screen will shift to greyscale and notifications will be silenced during those hours

What Should You Set Your Limit To?

There is no single right answer — but here is a practical starting point:

App

Suggested Starting Limit

Facebook

30 minutes per day

YouTube

45 minutes per day

News apps

20 minutes per day

All social media combined

60 minutes per day

Start with a limit that feels slightly challenging but not impossible. The goal is not to punish yourself, it is to be intentional. You can always adjust the limit after a week once you see how it feels.

What You Should Do Today

Setting a screen time limit is one of the simplest, most effective things you can do for your wellbeing this week. It takes five minutes and costs nothing — and your phone already has everything you need built right in.
